Seattle Restaurants and Chefs Nearly Shut Out in 2025 James Beard Nominations

This morning the James Beard Foundation announced the nominees for its restaurant awards, and Seattle Met 2024 Restaurant of the Year Atoma continued its rampage through national media and accolades by snagging a finalist spot for Best New Restaurant. That means it secured enough votes to move from semifinalist to straight-up nominee. The other local semifinalist, Familyfriend, did not make the cut. Seattle’s only other national-level nomination came from Archipelago, for Outstanding Hospitality.
Seattle fared even worse closer to home, without a single nomination for the regional Best Chef category, which covers Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Hawaii. Orcas Island’s Jay Blackinton of Houlme did snag one of the five spots to keep Washington on the board.
Seattle’s representation on the longer list of semifinalists released in January was sparse, presaging a potential continuation of Seattle’s shutout streak: not a single win in 2022, 2023, or 2024. The awards were on hiatus in 2020 and 2021. That means the last time a Seattle chef or restaurant won was in 2019, when then-Canlis chef (now Tomo) Brady Williams won for Best Chef Northwest.
The full list of nominations can be found here, and the award ceremony will held in Chicago on June 16.
