Art Intern

Seattle Met is currently seeking smart and creative design interns to help with the production of our full-color magazine. The position requires a minimum of 15 hours a week in 4- to 5-hour stints. The duration of this unpaid internship is generally 12 to 16 weeks depending on the needs/schedule of each candidate. We are flexible with student schedules during the academic year, and the internship can be used to fulfill school credit. There is also the possibility to be paid for ad design as a freelancer.

Depending on skill level, art intern opportunities may include page design and layout, photo research, marketing/collateral design, inputting editorial corrections, spot illustration, scanning and adjusting photos, ad design (paid as freelance), participating in team brainstorming meetings, and assisting with some administrative tasks.

When interns have proved successful on smaller art assignments, they may have the opportunity to contribute to or even design departments or features. We want our interns to walk away with strong clips that they have earned.

The ideal candidate will be working toward a bachelor’s degree in design, photography, illustration, publishing, or journalism, have a good understanding of print design, a working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite and Mac OS X, the ability to juggle several assignments at once, and have an interest in publication design.

Editorial Interns

Seattle Met is seeking smart and resourceful interns for our editorial department, located in Seattle, Washington. We are now accepting applications for our winter and spring internships in all beats, or areas of concentration: News and Politics, Food and Drink, the Arts, Style and Bridal, and Travel. Winter/spring internships start in early February. The deadline for winter applications is November 17.

Our editorial interns have gone on to work for Vanity Fair, Playboy, Eater Seattle, Chef Steps, Time, The Nation, Vice, Seattle Weekly, The Seattle Times, Bloomberg, and The Stranger. Past interns have also joined Seattle Met and other publications under SagaCity Media.

The unpaid internship lasts six months, 20–24 hours a week with flexible scheduling.

Responsibilities
  • Write for the blogs and magazine
  • Assist editors with research and reporting
  • Fact check and proofread
  • Upload/manage event and restaurant posts
  • Interview transcription
Qualifications
  • Background in journalism and/or creative writing
  • Ability to jump between often disparate tasks
  • Strong proofreading skills
  • Deadline oriented
  • Independent and self-motivated
Compensation

The internship is unpaid and can be used to fulfill school credit. Magazine contributions are paid on a case-by-case basis. Interns will leave with substantial bylines.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be working toward a bachelor’s degree in publishing, advertising, marketing/PR, business, or communications. Must have experience working with Word and Excel and be a master at multitasking.

Marketing & Events Intern

Seattle Met magazine is currently seeking a bright and motivated events/marketing intern to assist in the fast-paced and energetic events/marketing department for the fall term. The position requires a minimum of 15 hours a week in four- to five-hour stints. The duration of this unpaid internship is generally 12 to 16 weeks depending on the needs/schedule of the candidate. We are flexible with student schedules during the academic year, and the internship can be used to fulfill school credit.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to the following:

  •   Assisting with marketing/event coordination and production: pre-, day-of-, and post-event assistance (site planning, electrical and staging needs, décor/design and overall coordination)
  •    Data entry, filing, mailing projects
  •    Assisting in advertising department, including media tracking
  •    Creating, updating and assembling sales materials
  •    Assisting account executives with various projects 
  •    Participating in team meetings, and being a team player in general
  •    Compiling and managing event/advertising databases 
  •    Marketing collateral distribution

The Met Pages Advertising Intern 

Seattle Met magazine is currently seeking a motivated and outgoing intern to assist in the advertising department, specifically within The Met Pages section of the magazine.  This section highlights events around the community through photography, social media buzz, digital coverage, and print exposure in our magazine. 

The position requires a minimum of 15 hours a week in four- to five-hour stints. The duration of this unpaid internship is generally 12 to 16 weeks depending on the needs/schedule of the candidate. We are flexible with student schedules during the academic year, and the internship can be used to fulfill school credit.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include: 

  • Assisting with (and attending) The Met Pages events
  • Managing social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
  • Compiling and organizing event information and contacts
  • Client interaction 
  • Assisting with other various administrative tasks (data entry, filing, mailing projects)
  • Assisting account executives with various projects 
Qualifications

The ideal candidate is outgoing, a self-starter, and has energy to spare.  They are interested in social media initiatives, marketing, communications, and/or event planning.  They must be able to work some evenings and weekends.

The Met Pages Photography Intern

Seattle Met magazine is currently seeking a motivated and talented photography intern to assist The Met Pages photographers with all photo-related aspects of The Met Pages. The Met Pages is the section of Seattle Met that highlights events around the community through photography, social media buzz, digital coverage, and print exposure in our magazine. 

The position requires a minimum of 15 hours a week in four- to five-hour stints. The duration of this unpaid internship is generally 12 to 16 weeks depending on the needs/schedule of the candidate. We are flexible with student schedules during the academic year, and the internship can be used to fulfill school credit.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include: 

  • Assisting with (and attending) The Met Pages events
  • Shadowing the head of photography closely throughout the entire shooting process
  • Assisting with the full cycle of each Met Page production – coordinating photo-specific details prior to event, setting up equipment at event, shooting during event, breaking down and managing equipment post event, and managing photo process post event 
  • Client interaction
  • Booking and coordinating details for the photography team
  • Managing other various administrative tasks (organizing photo-specific information and contacts, maintaining photography production schedule)
  • Assisting the Met Pages account executive with various projects including social media, print and digital production if necessary
Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate is sociable, charismatic, passionate about photography and thrives while working with people
  • Must be a college student; photography or graphic design majors preferred
  • Creative with an eagerness to showcase his/her work
  • Capable of lifting heavy photography equipment (at least 80 lbs)
  • Has vehicle or other reliable mode of transportation
  • Has full frame DSLR
  • Is experienced in Lightroom and Photoshop
  • Willing to attend events on nights and weekends depending on current Met Pages schedule

Editorial Interns, Custom Division

SagaCity Media is looking for smart, motivated interns to join the Custom editorial team, located in Seattle, Washington. We are currently accepting applications for our winter term. The internship lasts between three and six months, 12-15 hours a week with flexible scheduling. 

Custom creates award-winning, Pacific Northwest-centric travel and tourism publications, from Visit Seattle to the Washington State Wine Tour Guide

Responsibilities 

At Custom, you’ll work closely with our editorial and art teams to learn firsthand how a magazine is put together. As for writing, interns are expected to cover a wide range of topics, from Food & Drink to Sports & Outdoors, but we do keep beat (area of concentration) preferences in mind. 

Editorial responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Writing print and digital content across Custom's publications (Interns who excel at smaller writing assignments will have the chance to contribute to department pieces and features–we want you to walk away with strong bylines.)
  • Assisting editors with research and reporting 
  • Fact-checking and proofreading
  • Contributing to editorial lineups
About You
  • Working toward a bachelor's or master's degree in the liberal arts, particularly journalism, English literature, or creative writing; graduates are also accepted. Successful candidates often have previous editorial experience at school magazines, newspapers, or other publications. 
  • Interest in magazine writing
  • Detail oriented
  • Deadline conscious
  • Strong research and communication skills
  • Self motivated 

Interest in travel writing is a plus.

Compensation

Unpaid; students may take the internship for college credit. You’ll also gain valuable experience, clips, and contacts along the way. Paid bylines (both print and digital).
