If it's vegan, does that mean it's healthy?

Shaun McCrain’s Copine Teaser  The erstwhile chef at the erstwhile Book Bindery divulged a few more specifics on what will likely be one of the most intriguing restaurant openings of 2015. He promises elegant fine dining by night, plus fancy takeaway food by day. Now all he needs is a location.


Sugar Plum’s Dairy-Free Sweetness Makini Howell knows her way around vegan burgers and mac and cheese. Now she’s taking on ice cream, doughnuts, cakes, and candy. Come March, her Plum Cafe on 15th Avenue will become an all-vegan ice cream and sweets shop.


Speaking of Vegan Ice Cream
 Molly Moon’s is taking a page from In-N-Out Burgers and offering a (kind of) secret menu item. Ask for Molly’s Favorite Vegan and receive dairy-free ice cream topped with vegan chocolate sauce, candied hazelnuts, and vegan coconut whipped cream. Covert orders have a certain charm, but the secrecy was born of insufficient space on the chalkboard menus.


Mexico City in Pioneer Square  The former Calozzi’s on Occidental will become Casco Antiguo, a restaurant drawing from several regions of Mexico, but largely its capital city. An attached cantina will dispense tequila and mezcal cocktails, cerveza, and (naturally) many a margarita. 


Caprial Pence Returns This prolific cookbook author, James Beard winner, talented chef, and generally delightful person returned after years living in Portland. Even more exciting—she’s running the kitchen at the Bookstore Bar and Cafe at the Alexis Hotel.


Walter Pisano Does Belltown  The 1910 Palladian building at Second and Virginia is becoming a Kimpton boutique hotel and the longtime Tulio chef is overseeing menus at two new spots within. Shaker and Spear will do classic seafood; Pennyroyal bar will serve punch bowls, bar snacks, and a generally European vibe.
