There seem to be a lot of breweries and bars and retaurants having birthdays/anniversaries this week, but two of them involve specially made beer.

The Pine Box, by far my favorite mortuary turned beer bar, is celebrating its second birthday with a custom brew from Bend's impressive 10 Barrel Brewing Company. It's a sour apple Berlinerweisse; Tieton Cider Works provided 300 gallons of fresh-pressed Granny Smith apples. The beer's name, The 2nd Nail (a coffin reference, obviously), is a followup to last year's The 1st Nail, an imperial stout made by Fremont Brewing.

The 2nd Nail debuts tomorrow, Thursday, March 20, at the Pine Box's anniversary festivities. The bar is also unearthing some 1st Nails from the cellar, including a barrel-aged version. The anniversary tap list looks like trouble, in the best possible way.

That same night, in the Central District, Justin Gerardy's tiny, wonderful Standard Brewing will mark one year of existence. His festivities run from noon to 10pm and will unfold around its Anniversary Ale, which the label describes as "a behemoth of an IPA." The alcohol level is a behemoth too—12 percent. The Anniversary Ale is the first Standard Brewing beer to make it into bottles, but only 100 of them. Standard will be selling them for $16 a pop, tax included, and the other half of the batch will be on draft.
