Monsoon Expands...and Adds a Proper Cocktail Bar

Wow, 19th Avenue is becoming quite the hotspot.

Get ready for a much larger Monsoon come spring.

Capitol Hill’s 19th Avenue microhood is getting an upcscale grocery, an ice cream-slash-cookie shop, and a Linda Derschang joint. And, apparently, a larger Monsoon, complete with a proper bar.

Eric and Sophie Banh's contemporary Vietnamese restaurant is adding 30 seats to its dining room (which currently seats about 45) by expanding the building on the restaurant’s south side. Noise, dust, and other fun realities of construction will be contained in the new space right up until it's ready to join forces with the existing dining room—some time in spring of 2014.

Ace beverage director Jon Christiansen has been finding creative ways (like prebatched bottled cocktails) to amp up Monsoon’s bar offerings within its current space constraints; now he’ll be able to offer a proper cocktail list (and full bar program) at this location, though word is the bottled cocktails will be sticking around. The new bar will also have about eight additional seats.

Construction begins October 15. Monsoon's Facebook page seems like a good way to track its progress.
