The darling but quiet east stretch of the Central District just got a new contender for Seattle’s attention. Without any advertising, Central Pizza had a soft opening over the weekend. Not only did they “crush it,” owner Eric Ellsworth says, they ran out of ingredients.

For a while now, we’ve been excited to see what owners Eric Ellsworth, Ellie Rose, and Steve Scalfati had in store for the Jackson Commons building on S Jackson St, formerly the home of All-Purpose Pizza. The crew did a serious overhaul in prep for the place, including the installation of a reclaimed-wood bar counter from Lakeside High School’s 1967 gym floor. Which means you could have a pint on the same wood that alum Bill Gates might have played on. Speaking of pints, not only will Standard Brew be on tap—a beer that sells out constantly from the stone’s-throw-away establishment down the street—you’ve also got five other local brews on tap, including wine and cider.

Chef Ivan will be flying pies in the back of the house, but don’t call his thin-crusted pizza “New York” style, because it’s more than that. Ellsworth says that Central’s pies will be inspired from the best styles of pizza-crafting, including techniques from Italian- and New York-style pizza, and all with the fresh, local flare of the Pacific Northwest. Gluten-free flour is also available.    

Central Pizza is kid-friendly, but might start to get hopping in the evening hours in the over-21 bar section. Happy hour is every day from 3 to 6, and 10 to close, where hot slices will go for $2 a wedge. Above all, Ellsworth promises to “keep the taps rotating, and keep it interesting.”
