Sunday Night Barbecue at Montana
On recent Sunday nights, Montana co-owner Kate Opatz has been calling on “different cook friends” from around town to come have their way with the bar’s gas grill out on the tiny patio. Think of it as a sort of lowbrow, low-key pop-up—one where you can get a bison burger or Korean barbecue sandwich made by a legit local chef for $10 or less. It’s entirely keeping with the bar itself, an affectionately divey place where the taps just happen to pour Fernet and carbonated cocktails.
The grilling starts at 5pm and lasts until the food runs out. “There’s not really enough room out there for people to sit,” Opatz explained, in between satisfying Wednesday night customers’ incessant requests for the bar’s carbonated Moscow mules and French 75s. “This seemed like a good use of the space.”
This Sunday, Terra Plata cook Shauna Scriver is doing chicken with red mole sauce and a side of cabbage salad and pickled chilies and carrots. The plate price is TBD, but Opatz says they’re trying to keep these Sunday night meals at $10 or less. July’s grilling lineup includes Kevin Burzell and Alysson Wilson of new Malaysian venture Kedai Makan, and Smith chef Chris Howell. The crowds have been growing each successive week (and the nice weather will only help matters) so get there early.
