Agua Verde Cafe: Paddle up for Tacos

What better time than Cinco de Mayo to prove Seattle’s got great Mexican restaurants?

Agua Verde Cafe Is that the Sea of Cortez out the window? Nope, it’s Portage Bay—but you did pull up in a kayak, and you are eating the best mahimahi tacos with avocado cream you’ve ever tasted.

Huarachito’s Shhh! Don’t tell anyone about this new Columbia City hole-in-the-wall serving every kind of fragrant meat on the pillowy stuffed flatbreads known as huaraches.

La Carta de Oaxaca Absolutely the standard­bearer in this town, with lush, layered moles and salsas in stylish windowy Ballard quarters, and the best entomatadas north of the border. Expect to wait.

Señor Moose Café This unassuming Ballard joint does dinner, too, but breakfast is its calling card. Don’t even get us started on the chilaquiles.

Tacos El Asadero The best of the taco trucks is pretty tricked out, with indoor seating and everything, but the food’s the thing, with exquisite mulitas and carnitas for just pesos.

Taqueria Muy Macho The pride of South Park, serving all the usuals (and a few of the un), including an intense, extraordinary mole negro. Spanish is the language of choice.
