Big Mario’s is ready to debut its new location in lower Queen Anne at 815 Fifth Ave N. It’s the second spot for the Capitol Hill pizzeria, a reliable Pike/Pine destination for the hunger-stricken nightlife crowd (presumably after a couple rounds).
Like its predecessor, the new joint maintains its divey New York feel, with a brick accent wall featuring a Saturday Night Fever- esque picture of Big Mario himself, vintage images including a glowing Farrah Fawcett, a red-lit bar in the back, and of course the infamous takeout car out front. Doors open today at 11 am and the first 100 people get a free slice.
Big Mario’s partner Mike McConnell owns Caffe Vita just up the street; when the Greek restaurant Panos Kleftiko shut down, he suggested Big Mario’s take it over. The Big Mario's team aims to expand into West Seattle and the U District as well.
Like the original, the new Big Mario’s serves pies and highly foldable slices (and delivers). In the future the menu may expand into more family-style dishes like pasta, as befits the more family friendly vibe here. Mario’s will be open every day from 11-2am. Visit the pizzeria's website for more information.
