This Week in Happy Hour: Warm and Cozy Edition

Because this weather calls for hot booze.

Heat and booze: It's almost as though, when combined, they are greater than the sum of their parts. At least as far as their ability to warm you up on a November evening is concerned. 

Here, where to glug some grog—Nordic sweater not included. 

Hi-Life: Fire is a theme at the Hi-Life, a former Ballard firehouse that now cooks pizza in a wood-fired oven. Warm up with a Taut Hoddy, a concoction of house-made spice-infused bourbon, honey, lemon and hot water. The afternoon happy hour runs from 3:30–6:30 everyday and includes $3.50 beer and wine selections, a special $5 cocktail, and discounted pizza and small plates.

Rachel’s Ginger Beer: Take the chill off after walking around Pike Place Market with a blood orange and bourbon hot toddy, served with a star anise garnish. Happy hour features $6 Moscow mules and $7 hot toddies, 5–7, seven days a week.

Hot Cakes: For the shivering sweet tooth, the Ballard cakery offers happy hour 3–6 Tuesday through Sunday, with $5 specials on food (think grilled cheese, warm cookies), wine, and cocktails. Hot drinks include butter beer ($4), caramel with mescal ($5), and chocolate with scotch and Solerno ($5).

Rumba: Caress a mug of Sano Grog (Jamaican rum, bourbon, curacao and lemon), Hot Buttered Rum (Demerara rum, allspice dram, butter, spices, orange), United Service Club Punch (Batavia Arrack, green tea, lemon, raw sugar), or Fort de France (rhum agricole, brandy, Giffard Banane, lemon). If you’re hungry, this Capitol Hill rum epicenter has baked empanadas for $3.50 and tacos for $2 (with some cold drink specials too) 5–6 daily.

Grog: As the name implies, Ballard Annex Oyster House’s new back bar has grog. Which historically, was swill cut with water for sailors to chug while singing shanties. Grog classes it up about a billion notches with two hot varieties: the Brave Walla, made with roasted chai, lemon hart 151, rhum orange, lemon, and honey, and the Ben Nevis, with floral tea, elder flower liqueur, lemon, and honey.  Served for one, two, four or eight drinkers. Happy hour food specials at Ballard Annex Oyster House include $1.50 oysters and $5 poutine, and are available 3:30–6 everyday.
