Hot hair hues are back. But instead of involving harsh bleaches, damaging dyes (and, oh, the commitment), today's colorful locks are of the temporary variety.

Hair chalking is a process that rubs vibrant chalks into hair leaving behind a colorful, temporary tint. The chalk shows up best on lighter hair works on any shade—just check out our brunette model whose dark hair we tinted blue for the Seattle Met spring fashion spread.

To increase the life of the color apply chalk to somewhat dirty hair, or add some texture with dry shampoo or hairspray; chalk sticks best to hair with some grip. When you're over the rocker chic look (or ready to switch shades) the hue washes out with mild shampoo. Be sure to follow up with a moisturizing conditioner because chalk tends to dehydrate hair.

For chalking your hair at home pick up product at local beauty supply stores or from any of the salons below. Professional chalk options include Kevin Murphy's Color Bug, but you can also use semi-soft pastels found at any craft store. No matter the product, expect a mess and cover clothes with a cape while applying.
