Lip Color of the Month: YSL Rouge Pur Couture

Orange de Chine, anyone?

By Amanda Zurita June 5, 2012

Orange you glad you can control the intensity? A girl’s gotta be flexible.

In May we eased into the vibrant tangerine trend with coral nails. Now its time to move the color to your pout.

We went to local makeup artist and Pioneer Square studio maven Tiffany Lowry (a.k.a. Tiffany Colors) for an expert pick this month, and she pointed to Yves Saint Laurent’s Rouge Pur Couture Vernis À Lèvres glossy stain in Orange de Chine.

Quel mouthful, huh?

The YSL shade is vibrant orange, but the level of saturation is up to you: "I love that you can build up the intensity with one to two more coats, so the tangerine color is on-trend in any comfort zone," says Lowry. With one swipe you’ve got the see-through quality of a gloss; add two more and you have a high-pigment lip lacquer.

Ms. Colors adds that this product has the best stay-put glossy stain she’s found: "The non-drying formula of the shine isn’t sticky so your lips look plump without all the goop. Mine lasts about four hours."

Just how does Yves Saint Laurent achieve this shiny but not sticky, lasting but not dry magic? The Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres formula is based on a new system called Lifeproof Color Emulsion (again, what?). It all comes down to an ultra-resistant polymer, used in the agri-food sector to give things like apples a tempting shine. "Bite into that," snaps Lowry.

Don’t go trying to find the gloss in the produce aisle, though. Y.S.L.’s Rouge Pur Couture stain is for sale at Sephora for $32.
