Plymouth Housing provides permanent homes and comprehensive support to help Seattle residents leave long-term homelessness behind for good. Since 1980, this non-profit, independent organization has been developing and operating housing for those facing homelessness.
In the 1990s, Plymouth Housing deepened their commitment to their residents and put the pieces in place for a long, strong future. They added supportive services to their apartments to help residents achieve stability in housing and started advocating for public policy changes to benefit Seattle’s residents experiencing homelessness. In the early 2000s, Plymouth completed a $22 million capital campaign, resulting in the renovation of two existing Plymouth properties, the Lewiston and Pacific Apartments, as well as the construction of the Pat Williams Apartments.
Today, Plymouth is one of the largest providers of low-income housing in downtown Seattle with over 1,000 residents and 17 retail tenants in 14 buildings. Their comprehensive approach in supporting those who face homelessness with both housing and supportive services has earned the organization local and national recognition.
Plymouth Housing maintains their mission of housing first. They offer homes to people experiencing homelessness because stable housing transforms lives. Without a home, people cannot meet basic needs. Sleeping, eating and bathing become monumental tasks. Many experiencing homelessness also live with disabilities, substance abuse disorders and behavioral health conditions. Instead of getting the support they need, their challenges are furthered by life on the street. At Plymouth, barriers like rental history, credit checks and security deposits are lowered making housing accessible to those who need it. The model of permanent housing with supportive services gives Plymouth Housing residents the solid base needed to rebuild their lives and leave homelessness behind forever.
