Morning Fizz

Priceless

By Morning Fizz April 29, 2010

This post has been updated to reflect that Kirstin Haugen has pulled out of the 1rst District State House race.

1. Yesterday afternoon King County Council Member Larry Phillips' chief of staff, BrynDel Swift, emailed former King County Council Member (and now Democratic Party State Chair) Dwight Pelz, inviting Pelz to sit at Phillips' table for the annual Cascade Land Conservancy breakfast.

The CLC's 15th annual breakfast—starting at 7am at the Washington Convention Center on May 6—is a bigwig establishment shindig. (Sponsors this year  include K&L Gates, Boeing, the Hanauer Foundation, CleanScapes, Davis Wright Tremaine, Wells Fargo, Microsoft, Starbucks, Vulcan  etc.) And the table captains are a who's who of Seattle's banquet set, including Microsoft lobbyist DeLee  Shoemaker, Pat Fearey from the Fearey Group, Anne Fennessy from Cocker Fennessy, Kate Joncas from the Downtown Seattle Association, John Rindlaub from Wells Fargo and on and on.

Check out Pelz's hilarious response to the invite:

2. Kirstin Haugen, sister of former Mayor Mike McGinn aide Chris Bushnell, was running for state Rep. in the 1st District (Bothell, Woodinville) before withdrawing in February.

According to her campaign finance reports, she also returned $3200 in contributions from Bushnell and his wife on February 13, about 10 days after Bushnell was forced to resign when PubliCola broke the news that he'd lied about his credentials.

The only contributions Haugen returned, according to disclosure records, are the four contributions of $800 from her brother and sister-in-law.

3.
The state has altered its 520 plan to mitigate the impact on Westside Seattle neighbors. Changes include dropping a direct ramp from the Arboretum to eastbound 520 and the section across Portage Bay, from the Montlake Interchange to I-5, would be narrower and a have a slower, 45-mph speed limit.  Here's Seattle Times reporter Mike Lindblom's report.

4. At last night's city budget forum
at the New Holly Gathering Hall in SE Seattle, dozens of people lined up to implore Mayor Mike McGinn and the City Council not to cut cherished programs. Top of the list: human services and parks.

Shannon Gooding from Queen Anne showed up, flanked by five kids in bathing suits, intending to  ask the city not to close down her pool. However, she said, "Having been here for an hour, I'm also here to support homeless shelters. Please put that before the pool. I support the pools, but shelters are more important."

The Council and Mayor joint public hearing on the budget next Tuesday, May 4, at North Seattle Community College.
