St. Vincent + David Byrne, Rufus Wainwright Coming in October

A killer collaboration and a cultured Canuck.

By Seth Sommerfeld June 25, 2012

The Canadian coy of Rufus Wainwright.

In something straight out of a glorious Williamsburg fever dream, multi-instrumentalist St. Vincent and former Talking Head David Byrne have made an album together. Love This Giant drops on September 11 and features 12 brass-heavy tracks (ten collaborations and one solo song a piece) with guest appearances by Afrobeat gods Antibalas and Sharon Jones’s regular soul band the Dap-Kings. On "Who" (the album’s one track currently available for free download), the musical interplay between the two is exactly what we’d hope for: Byrne vocals evoke vintage Heads while St. Vincent offers a lilting, dreamy counterpoint. Bonus: There’s some funky sax. The duo will stop by 5th Avenue Theatre on October 17 as part of CityArts Fest 2012. In addition to showcasing the new album, St. Vincent and Byrne plan to play select songs from their own discographies.

Tickets to see St. Vincent and David Byrne on October 17 at the 5th Avenue Theatre are on sale now at 5thavenue.org.

Also this fall: Rufus Wainwright will play Benaroya Hall on October 1. The Juno-winning singer-songwriter won over critics with his piano-driven brand of pop, but in recent years he had shied away from the moneymaker. He released a live Judy Garland tribute album in 2006, adapted Shakespeare’s sonnets for All Days Are Nights: Songs About Lulu, and penned his first-ever opera, Prima Donna. But his latest album, Out of the Game, returns to form and delivers the most accessible pop sound of his career. Released in May, the record features appearances by Wilco guitarist Nels Cline and Yeah Yeah Yeah’s guitarist Nick Zinner.

Tickets to see Rufus Wainwright on October 1 at Benaroya Hall are on sale now for Seattle Symphony subscribers; the general sale starts August 4 at 10am at seattlesymphony.org.
