Zoe Juniper performs The Devil You Know Is Better Than the Devil You Don’t, 2008.

RETURNING AFTER LAST year’s sold-out success, the A.W.A.R.D. Show dance contest pits 12 top Northwest choreographers against each other for the chance to win $10,000 and major bragging rights. Not that they want to brag. They’re not even sure they want to compete.

“I feel bad when anyone loses—sports, anything,” said Zoe Scofield, whose dance company Zoe Juniper is a collaboration with visual artist Juniper Shuey. They declined to enter the inaugural competition in 2009, but have since had a change of heart. “It’s a different interaction when the audience is voting… It sort of puts all parties involved on the line. This sort of engaged experience is great and what I want to foster and be a part of.”
