Hungry for news? Welcome to our Friday Feed, where we run through all the local food and restaurant news this week—and maybe help you figure out where to eat this weekend.
Openings
JesDarnel Henton carries on her mother's legacy at Ms. Helen's Soul Bistro.
Go Hog Wild: In what we think is the most exciting food news in a while, Central District legend and Soul Food icon Ms. Helen’s Soul Bistro reopened inside a Renton Harley-Davidson dealer.
That’s a Wrap: Bori Korean Restaurant soft opened in Factoria, bringing big platters of bossam for nestling into lettuce and braised short ribs served on hot stones. More exciting menu items should roll out as the restaurant gets settled, including the oyster bossam and the snow fried chicken wings, which get hit with a blizzard of cheese.
Fancy Toast: Cheers! Hong Kong soft opened in the former Lionhead space, reports Capitol Hill Seattle. The new Hong Kong–style cafe comes from the owner of Dumpling the Noodle in Wallingford and Kirkland. While HK cafes tend to be minimalist affairs, this one has a more upscale look than the genre’s usual, with a big photo of the island glowing from the wall, comfy booths, and cocktails.
Seafood Swap: After a few weeks of soft opening, Happy Crab officially opened in Auburn. The owner of Xi’an Noodle in Seattle and Bellevue originally intended for that to be a fourth location, but the bigger space inspired her to switch to a Cajun boiled seafood concept.
Reopenings
Brunch Phoenix: More than three years after closing because of a fire, Issaquah breakfast spot the Egg and Us has finally reopened. In the meantime, the Ballard Location appears to be under different ownership, with a recent liquor license filed by Victor and Jessica Morales—who also revamped and reopened Julia’s of Wallingford earlier this year—as the Block Cafe.
Sushi Swap: Ballard’s Shiku Sushi closed for only a hot second before reopening last week under new ownership, reports My Ballard. The refresh probably won’t give customers too much of a surprise, since the new owner is a longtime employee and most recently the general manager of the restaurant.
Competing for Most Improved: Local pizza chain Tutta Bella closed its 17-year-old location on Westlake in South Lake Union at the beginning of the month, but only because this week, it reopened with a brand-new location less than a half mile away. The new location is bigger and fancier, and will have more non-pizza entrée options, as well as house the company’s R&D kitchen.
Closing
Goodbye Dumpling: Wedgwood Chinese restaurant Chopsticks has closed, leaving fans of their excellent tofu and water-boiled beef disappointed.
Don’t Dance Off Yet: On a Facebook live this week, Century Ballroom owner Hallie Kuperman announced the dance studio will close in 2025. Maybe. Not before March. Details haven’t been set yet, but the venue is not signing a new lease, so things are up in the air.
Coming Soon
Getting Hygge with It: A few weeks ago, we mentioned that General Harvest Restaurants was taking over the old Samara space in Sunset Hill. This week, the company announced the name and concept: Eldr. It means fire in Old Norse, a nod to the live fire in the kitchen that they’ll use for cooking when they open, hopefully next month.
No Buns in This Oven: Also opening in December is a Pike Place Market location for Pufftown Bakehouse. The creative croissant maker produces flavors like Middle School Crush—a laminated muffin with peanut butter buttercream and strawberry jam—at popups and for Cortina Café, Goldfinch, and Le Pichet, In three weeks, pastry whiz Daniel Durand will open the stand-alone spot in the former Taxi Dogs stand.
