This Week in Restaurant News: Lunch Excitement

Shanik opens a market, Calf and Kid plans as cheese bar, and Hitchcock announces a deli in Georgetown.

Shanik Market
had a busy week; the Indian restaurant deep in the Amazon has begun taking reservations and opened a market full of takeaway options next door. There are a few hot lunch items, plus several options for take-out dinners, including the Vij's brand boil-in-bag meals.

Bauhaus Ballard
My Ballard says the cafe's new location at NW Market and 20th Ave NW is open for business. The manager says the new location looks an awful lot like the Capitol Hill original (sniff) but with more vegan and gluten-free pastry optoins. Oh, and a Twice Sold Tales sharing the space.


French Fry Heaven
It’s a fries-only shop, coming to Southcenter Mall. It's a chain, and it’s also kind of enticing. Similar to the frites of Belgium, Fry Heaven’s fries are thick-cut and fried twice. However, the toppings are somewhat more American, from sour cream, bacon, and chives to wing sauce.

Octopus Bar
Wallyhood says the former Wallingford Pizza House address (2109 N 45th Street) is about to become Octopus least if the Kickstarter gets fully funded. The Kickstarter description promises "thoughtfully planned brews, signature beverages and richly flavored dishes."

A Calf and Kid Sibling Cheese Bar
Owner Sheri LaVigne has plans to open Seattle's first cheese bar, complete with raclette, beer, wine, and booze pairings, and what has to be an outstanding mac and cheese. LaVigne has, naturally, created a Kickstarter to help fund the project. It should brie open (sorry for the cheese joke, I couldn't resist) in early 2014. 

Hitchcock Deli
Brendan McGill is busy with his Pioneer Square beer hall Alstadt, but he has also begun work on a new deli in Georgetown. Look for a succinct sandwich menu with beer and wine, a la the Bainbridge Island original. McGill plans to cure meats in the back according to Eater Seattle. Altstadt should open around November 1 and Hitchcock Deli is expected in March 2014. The second Bainbridge Island location, by the way, is not happening. 


North Hill Bakery
The space on 15th has been a bakery for 80 years, but the last day to get a vanilla croissant or a wedding cake is fast approaching. The bakery is closing up shop at the end of October, according to Capitol Hill Seattle blog. Carolyn Cakes occupied the space before North Hill opened in 2000. Make sure to check out the bakery's garage sale in November.


This is round two, eight years later, for the French-inspired restaurant. Owner Jef Fike plans to open Cassis on Alki. The basics will be the same as the late Capitol Hill location. The opening is planned for February 2014. A November 11 preview will be available via a pop-up at Grub on Queen Anne, according to Eater Seattle.


Michael Mina's wine-focused restaurant, with a name that sounds like a robot from Star Wars, now offers a new box lunch delivery service in Downtown. On the menu: a variety of sandwiches, like a salmon BLT, or salads accompanied by a seasonal side dish and a fresh-baked cookie. There is a 10-box delivery minimum, so either you really like sandwiches or are holding an office meeting.

The Rock
Have you ever wanted an Elvis impersonator to deliver a pizza to your house? Well now is your chance...sort of. The Rock Wood Fired Pizza now delivers to its neighborhood of Queen Anne. And it's getting a head start on Halloween. The delivery people will be dressed as “rock stars” like Jimi Hendrix or ZZ Top (Is that the band name and the band member's name?). Delivery is ongoing, but you can partake of this costume spectacle on October 10, 17, 24 and 31.

E. Smith Mercantile
The Pioneer Square boutique/ cocktail bar, sent word that it's expanding serve to include morning coffee (its own Bio Willy house roast, poured via chemex) and breakfast. It starts October 21 at 10 am. 


David Nelson, Clare Gordon: Aragona
We were already excited for Jason Stratton upcoming Spanish restaurant because Carrie Mashaney, now on Top Chef: New Orleans, will be in kitchen. Now we're pretty excited about the cocktail program too. David Nelson, of Tavern Law and Spur, and most recently Il Bistro, is on board to launch the bar program, according to Eater Seattle. And Clare Gordon has come up from Ava Gene's in Portland to be pastry chef.
