What do Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Shawn Serven have in common? At any given time they might all be seen sporting one of Serven's signature painted leather jackets. Interested in joining that club? Keep reading.
Serven, who works on Olivia Kim's team at Nordstrom, studied fashion design at FIDM in Los Angeles before moving to the Pacific Northwest and assembling his squad of famous friends. His first painted leather jacket was more of a hobby for a Halloween project, but when Kim caught of glimpse of it she commissioned a full lineup for this spring's Magic Hour Pop-In. Every piece was scooped up.
Now, Serven is back with a handful of jackets—each one unique and edgy and full of color and life—for a month-long solo show (his first) at Art Primo on Captiol Hill. "I'm so inspired by the neighborhood and community here," he told me before the art walk opening last night. Two of the jackets on display are blank canvases, more or less, with paint pens attached and a note encouraging visitors to add to the art. He's hoping to sell them early on to trusting shoppers who will take home the marked up pieces when then show ends in September.
His work is also heavily influenced by music, with the show titled and based around the song "Hey QT" by electronic artist QT.
In addition to jackets, the show features original prints, hand-painted houseplants, and a selection of distressed/dyed/painted denim pieces (I'm in love with the pink and feather number below) that Serven either sewed himself or altered from vintage pieces. There are also some fun tulle crops, tees, stickers, and other swag. Jackets are priced at $495—a steal considering the ones sold at Nordstrom ran for hundreds of dollars more.
Stop by and see the looks in person (you really should) from now through September 11. While you're there, pick up some paint supplies to DIY your own piece or accent one of Serven's.
