Meet the Shopkeeper: Zelda Zonk Consignment

When Carrie Zimney designed her West Seattle boutique Zelda Zonk Consignment earlier this summer, she wanted the interiors to reflect the store’s message: one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Using recycled materials like old wooden pallets, Zimney created a cozy upscale space that looks like it jumped right off a Pinterest board. Filled with preloved pieces by brands like Chanel, Chloe, J.Crew, Ann Taylor, and Anthropologie, there's something to suit every style, shape, and budget.
What song or album is playing on your store’s sound system right now?
Alt J - Lovely Day
What was your first job and how does it compare to what you do now?
When I was 13 I was paid $1 an hour to babysit two kids in the neighborhood. Their mom would supplement my wage by paying me with clothes, and I thought this was absolutely awesome. I remember lugging home garbage bags full of her gently used clothing. I love that it taught me how to reduce, reuse, and recycle at such an early age. Because most of my clothes growing up were used it taught me to be creative with piecing outfits together.

What’s your favorite piece in the store right now?
I’m in love with a Diane von Furstenberg dress. It’s silk with little pockets and has a Matisse-inspired print. So chic and modern.
Why did you choose the name?
Zelda Zonk was Marilyn Monroe’s incognito name. She brought us from black and white to color and her playful spirit has always inspired me. I also thought it was perfect since many women go consignment shopping incognito.
Where do you shop when you’re not at your store?
I’m all about consignment shopping. Labels in Phinney Ridge and Sell Your Sole in Belltown are two of my favorites in the city.
What do you love about your store’s neighborhood?
West Seattle is home to me. I’ve been overwhelmed by the sense of community and amazing women who have reached out and asked how they can help support me in this new venture. The neighborhood is full of happy and smart people. I love being a part of it.

What nearby restaurants, coffee shops, etc. do you recommend?
Caffe Fiore is right next door. I have to practice willpower not to go there every day. Pizzeria 22 has killer wood fired pizzas and I’ve fallen in love with the mechanics at Harrah’s Automotive Services.
What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened in your store?
Nothing too exciting or weird has happened yet, but it’s only been a month. I’m sure there will be some fun stories in no time.
