What Bainbridge Designer Erin Roby is Crushing On

The knitting enthusiast-turned-designer tells us about her love for ankle boots, witty style blogs, and more.

By Julia Kernerman September 10, 2013

Erin Roby originally signed up for a beginner's sewing class at Ballard's New York Fashion Academy as a way of getting to know her new neighborhood and meeting other style-orientated Seattleites. Sewing immediately clicked for Roby, who has always enjoyed art and working with her hands.

Roby calls her new collection "Northwest modern;" if you'd like to see what that means, check it out at the Independent Designer Runway Showcase this September. Here, she answers our questions about her current obessessions.

Favorite style blog?
Man Repeller. Leandra Medine's wit is delightful. Plus, I'm a big fan of women who dress for themselves, even if that means they're wearing drop crotch pants.
Best Instagram feed?
Local florist and event designer McKenzie Powell's feed is lovely. It's exciting to watch someone as talented and hardworking as Powell do what she loves to do! I loved working with her on my wedding and have been scheming of ways to work with her again.
Who does your hair?
Scott at Vain in Ballard. Come to think of it, it's about time I go see him! Thanks for the reminder.
What item of clothing or accessory has been in heavy rotation this month?
The black Dieppa Restrepo ankle boots that my husband gave me for my birthday. It's difficult to get me out of boots, even in the summer.
What item of clothing or accessory would you buy right now if you could?
I'd be lying if I told you it'd be something other than another pair of black boots! Margiela's Hidden Wedge Boot from Totokaelo is at the top of my list.
Favorite coffee shop or café?
Hitchcock's Delicatessen on Bainbridge is my favorite place to sip a hand-pulled espresso any time of day.
Best restaurant for getting dressed up and wearing a great outfit?
Terra Plata, even if it's just for churros and champagne.
Where'd you go the last time you got out of town?
My last trip was down to Key West with my girlfriends to celebrate my friend Kat's birthday on Cinco de Mayo. We rented a condo, biked around the island in swimsuits and sun hats, and sipped on drinks by the beach. It was just what I needed after a long, dark winter!
Soundtrack for a Sunday afternoon?
Lately, my Sunday soundtrack has been Nicolas Jaar's Essential Mix on repeat. It's perfect whether I'm at home having coffee or at my shop working through an idea. Bonus: He'll be making an appearance at Decibel this September!
Seattleite you'd most like to meet?
Marshawn Lynch. Go Hawks!
