Behind the Scenes: Style Counselor Michael Cepress

October 5, 2009

Michael Cepress before our Style Counsel shoot; note the great vest and watch chains under his vintage-styled jacket. And that hair!

Under the heading More is More, I bring you Behind the Pages, a new sporadically appearing Wear What When feature in which we chat with folks who appear or have contributed to the print issue. First up: October’s Style Counselor Michael Cepress.

When I visited Cepress’s studio/shop for the first time, one of the things that clued me into the designer/tailor’s sense of humor and the cleverly spirited good time he has with what he does was a sign that read Seamster. I recall doing a little etymology homework; according to Merriam-Webster, the word “tailor” is gender neutral and dates to the 13th century while “seamstress” refers to a woman whose work is in the realm of needle of thread and dates to 1598. I don’t know what else to make of it, but Cepress does: A blog.

The seamster in question says his Soul of a Seamster began “years ago as a means of having a digital sketchbook/journal for myself and people interested in following my work. My blog is the place I try to keep others in the loop with what’s happening at my studio and shop…and it also becomes a place where I simply volley creative ideas, post new work, and talk about what excites and inspires me, with hopes of this all being somewhat interesting or insightful to others.” I’m here to tell you that it very often is.

Tailors of either gender as well as those who need and admire them should consider bookmarking Cepress’s blog as well as these three blogs, his favorite picks for continuing the never-ending quest to honor his tradition and craft.

Made by Hand - a super geeky look at the super fine details of suit-making and suit-wearing. You’ll never pass by Butch Blum or Brooks Brothers with the same eyes.

English Cut, in which a proper Savile Row tailor annotates his life.

The Sartorialist because, c’mon, if you’re not following Scott Schuman’s blog, you’re not following mens fashion.
