After the mayor's housing affordability committee (known as HALA) released its recommendations on Monday, a heated discussion flared up about a claim in the report—which recommended upzoning a sliver of Seattle's single family zones and allowing more housing types throughout—that the city's traditional SFZs had a racist and exclusionary past.
Roughly 65 percent of Seattle is zoned for single family neighborhoods. And specifically, the HALA committee recommended upzoning six percent of that land (when its near transit or urban villages), and also recommended upzoing at SFZ borders near multi-family zones. The goal is to create greater density and more diverse housing stock, both in type and affordability.
