PubliCalendar: A Science Buff Double Feature

UW Science Now Double Feature
Town Hall hosts two UW Science Now scholars back to back Monday evening: Jennifer McCreight and Leonard Mlodinow.
McCreight cracks open what makes us human, comparing the DNA of humans to chimpanzees, monkeys, and lemurs (if you forgot what you learned in your college biology series, this will be a good one to attend). Afterward Mlodinow, author of The Upright Thinkers, will trace the history of human thought, arguing that the way we think has just as much influence on science as science does on human thinking (kind of meta).
Make sure to buy a ticket for each segment ($5 each).
UW Science Now Double Feature, Mon, May 11, 6pm, Town Hall Seattle, 1119 Eighth Ave, $5–$10
Conserving Ecosystems with De-Extinction
Talks on evolutionary biology have been a hot topic this month Downtown—How to Clone a Mammoth author Beth Shapiro is bringing the Burke's Lulu back into our consciousness. For real, Shapiro's book explores whether mammoths, passenger pigeons, and other creatures can be brought to life, and she'll be talking de-extinction Tuesday evening. Could a real-life Jurassic Park be in our midst?
Conserving Ecosystems with De-Extinction, Tue, May 12, 6pm, Town Hall Seattle, 1119 Eighth Ave, $5
Terrorism, Propaganda, and U.S. Middle Eastern Policy
Al Jazeera's 2013 documentary series The Secret of the Seven Sisters taught us that the Middle East has been caught in a power struggle ever since oil was discovered. Terrorism, Propaganda, and U.S. Middle Eastern Policy features journalist David Barsamian, who offers some perspective on the United States' role in modern oil imperialism.
He'll tackle historical factors shaping conflicts in Iraq, previous U.S. interventions, and Washington-backed regimes in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Egypt, focusing on propaganda and policy-based justifications that conceal overseas motives. Learn what's really up in the Middle East.
Terrorism, Propaganda, and U.S. Middle Eastern Policy, Wed, May 20, 7pm, Town Hall Seattle, 1119 Eighth Ave, $5
