Jolt
Wednesday Jolt: Cheryl Chow
No winner or loser today; just a Jolt: As we mentioned in On Other Blogs earlier today, former city council member and Seattle School Board member Cheryl Chow, who is dying of a neurological cancer, came out as gay to KING 5 today.
In a heartbreaking interview, Chow told KING's Lori Matsukawa that she was "afraid" of saying she was gay "for over 60 years. And those 60 years were wasted." Chow said that although her mother, longtime ID restaurant owner and King County Council member Ruby Chow, welcomed gay patrons to her restaurant, "that didn't mean she wanted me to be gay."
As for whether Seattle's Chinese American community will accept her decision to come out, Chow said, "What can they do now? Kill me?"
"If I can save one child from feeling bad or even committing suicide because they thought they were terrible because they were gay, then I will have succeeded in my last crusade," Chow said.
Chow and her partner, Susan Morningstar, an assistant principal, have one adopted child.
