On Other Blogs Today: McKenna's Education Plan, the Arena, City Tar-jay, and More

By Erica C. Barnett August 1, 2012

Our daily roundup.

1. The AP's Rachel La Corte reports
on Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna's education plan, which would fund an additional $1./7 billion in education through 2015 by capping spending on all other state services, including salaries, health care, and prisons. The Seattle Times' Danny Westneat is skeptical about the plan.

2. The West Seattle Herald lays out
some of the Port of Seattle's main issues with the arena proposal. Chief among them, according to Port Commissioner John Creighton, is that "We (the Port) were completely caught off guard by this deal."

3.
The fact that Target has set up shop in downtown Seattle (and more big cities this summer), complete with bicycle icons and a gay wedding registry, is a moment of progress for America. Think not that urban values are being co-opted, though they certainly are; recognize rather that the urban voice is now pushing into the culture at large. We're winning.

Who better to sign off on Target's foray into the urban landscape than Seattle's premier champion of  city values, architecture-meets-hip-hip scholar Charles Mudede?

Charles reviews City Target in today's Stranger
.

4. The Stand
, Washington State Labor Council's blog, has details on what you can do to support striking Waste Management sanitation workers.

5. This is why we can't have nice things: Link Light Rail service will be reduced some nights so Sound Transit can replace the copper wiring that was stolen earlier this year, Seattle Transit Blog reports.
