Morning Fizz
Capsized Conventional Wisdom
Caffeinated News & Gossip. Your daily Morning Fizz.
1. State Rep. Gerry Pollet (D-46, N. Seattle)---appointed to fill then-Rep. David Frockt's 46th District house seat last year when Frockt was appointed to replace the late state Sen. Scott White---announced yesterday that both his 46th District legislative colleagues, Frockt and retiring state Rep. Phyllis Gutierrez Kenney, have endorsed him.
Pollet is being challenged by Sylvester Cann, a former aide to White who narrowly lost the appointment to Pollet.
Pollet also nabbed the sole recommendation from the King County Labor Council yesterday.[pullquote]Fathi capsized the conventional wisdom that her win at Monday night's cool kids' forum in Belltown didn't truly reflect the district.[/pullquote]
2. In other legislative district news: 36th District (Ballard, Greenwood, Fremont, Phinney Ridge, Queen Anne) candidate Sahar Fathi capsized the conventional wisdom that her win at Monday night's cool kids' forum at the Spitfire in Belltown didn't truly reflect the district. At last night's 36th District nominating meeting at the creaky Phinney Ridge Neighborhood Association building off Phinney near Red Mill Burgers, the district's Precinct Committee Officers nominated Fathi as the official candidate from the 36th.
One of Fathi's opponents, Seattle Port Commissioner Gael Tarleton, won the first two rounds---handily in the first heat, with more than 40 percent among the five candidates. (In a surprise, Progressive Majority leader Noel Frame didn't make it past the first round). But by the third round, with only Tarleton and Fathi still in the running, Fathi scooped up more PCOs from the ousted candidates, winning 52 to 48 percent.
Footnote: Fizz is not surprised that the vote came down to Fathi and Tarleton; a PCO friend called us recently seeking advice on the only two candidates who had called them—Fathi and Tarleton.
3. Democratic consultant Lisa MacLean, who runs Moxie Media, scored a prize 2012 contract: Moxie will be doing the mail for the pro side on the high-profile gay marriage referendum.
Moxie has helped elect (and re-elect) more pro-marriage equality legislators (including gay state Rep. Dave Upthegrove, D-33) than any other local consulting firm, including seven of the State Senators who made up the 55-43 margin for passage of the Marriage Equality Bill. The list includes: Sens. Nick Harper (D-38), Adam Kline (D-37), Derek Kilmer (D-26), Margarita Prentice (D-11), Craig Pridemore (D-49), Rodney Tom (D-48), and Christine Rolfes (D-23).
Moxie Media was at the center of a controversy in the 2010 election cycle, resulting in a settlement with the Washington State Attorney General, for concealing the funds of a ruse political committee.
4. State auditor Brian Sonntag has concluded that employees of a nonprofit agency called Senior Services that contracted with the city of Seattle to provide help to caregivers, usually grandparents, who look after relatives under the age of 19, misappropriated more than $132,000 and made "questionable" expenditures of nearly $96,000.
Those expenditures included more than $90,000 paid to a fictitious vendor; more than $16,000 for "personal vehicle repairs"; $13,000 to someone who falsely represented him or herself as a caregiver's landlord; plus car payments, gas, and air fare to Las Vegas.
The expenditures also included tens of thousands of dollars in gift cards that "could not be confirmed as going to a valid caregiver due to a lack of internal controls," plus expenditures on car rentals, a camcorder, pet supplies, men's clothing, massage services, flowers, and hotels.
The Senior Services scandal has rocked the city's Human Services Department, forcing the resignation of the city's ex-director of Aging and Disability Services, Pam Piering, amid allegations that she ignored whistleblower complaints about Senior Services' behavior.
