A Letter to Obama: Please Don't Take the Ladies for Granted

By Erica C. Barnett March 14, 2012

Dear President Obama,

We---the women of the US---get it. We know that voting for you is a better option than voting for any of your Republican opponents---who, respectively, have vowed to "get rid of" Planned Parenthood, said contraception is "a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be," and accused women
who want access to birth control  of "attacking the Catholic Church."

But, seriously, President Obama? It sure would be nice to hear you actually say, in a national address, "I respect women and their right to choose when and whether they want to be pregnant, and I am opposed to any efforts to restrict that right." It may seem like a small thing to someone who has never had to pay full price for birth control pills ($30-$60 a month, by the way), or pay for an abortion ($500 and up)  but it's important---and given that we're in the midst of a war on women unprecedented in the last 50 years,, now is as good a time as any to stand with half the US population.

Oh, and calling for a "Women's Week of Action" doesn't cut it.

Thanks,

A (reluctant) Obama voter,

Erica C. Barnett
