WSJ: "Mayor McSchwinn"'s Popularity Problem

By Erica C. Barnett January 23, 2012

Well, it's official: The "Mayor McSchwinn" meme has been picked up by none other than the Wall Street Journal, which reports
on Mayor Mike McGinn's unpopularity.

Unsurprisingly, they get a lot of things wrong---blaming McGinn, for example, for "opposing a new car bridge to nearby Redmond" (McGinn opposed building the 520 bridge---which technically connects Seattle to Bellevue, not Redmond---without room for light rail, and for hiking parking fees, a decision that was actually made, and pushed, by the city council)---but they also got the mayor to make a few candid points.

For example, asked if the Seattle Times was a "right-wing newspaper," McGinn responded, "It is! It is!"

And the WSJ quotes likely McGinn challenger, City Council member Tim Burgess, accusing the mayor of heading up a "disorderly" government.

But, they report, McGinn says he will run for reelection next year.
"Who knows, man, who knows where I stand" with the public, he says. He has made changes. He tries to get along better with the City Council, and he got a new professional wardrobe. He wears a black suit and blue shirt and tie. He shed about 50 pounds in the last year. Around dinnertime at his office last week, I find him digging into a bowl of cottage cheese and orange slices.

Before he ran the first time, he says, "they all told me I couldn't win my election, [that] I didn't stand a chance. They're all telling me I'm washed up now. Everybody is lining up to figure out who will be the next candidate. You know, I don't know if I should say this on the record, but they're underestimating [me]. I think I've got them right where I want them."
