Beat Out the Incumbents
Caffeinated News & Gossip. Your Daily Morning Fizz.
1. The 37th District Democrats in Southeast Seattle held their endorsement meeting last night. All four school board challengers—Sharon Peaslee (North Seattle), Kate Martin (Green Lake), Michelle Buetow (Capitol Hill, Laurelhurst, Roosevelt) and Marty McLaren (West Seattle)—beat out the incumbents. (The school board seat representing south Seattle is not up this election, but school board elections are city wide at the general level.)
Also noteworthy, while the group didn't make an endorsement on the $60 car tab fee, the majority of members were against the measure. Measures need 60 percent to win endorsement.
2. Many council members, including Tim Burgess and Jean Godden, hailed yesterday's 8-1 vote on the paid sick leave ordinance as a victory for women. Godden is now sponsoring some more lefty, lady-friendly legislation: a bill that would require the city to provide a place to express breast milk to all city workers.[pullquote]Godden is now sponsoring some more lefty, lady-friendly legislation.[/pullquote]
It's probably no coincidence that Godden is introducing the proposal at a time when she's fighting for reelection, against a candidate, Bobby Forch, who's portraying himself as "the true progressive" in the race. Godden has argued that the council needs more women to support woman-friendly policies at the city level.
3. As we noted in yesterday's Campaign Fizz, US Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA, 1) reported raising $500,000 in August. Fizz has since checked out some of the donors listed in Inslee's August haul. In with there with some notable big donors—Costco CEO James Sinegal at $3200; Teamsters leader John Williams at $1000; US Rep. Adam Smith's (D-WA, 9) campaign at $1600; some Microsoft execs, Seattle City Council member Tim Burgess, and a sprinkling of green bio companies—execs at Infinia Corps., Altaock Energy, and Imperium Renewables; here's an odd $5 gift to Inslee's campaign: Former US congressional candidate, Darcy Burner, now Executive Director of the Progressive Caucus. Add that to her $100 donation in July, and Burner is in for $105 to Inslee.
4. The redistricting commission is unveiling its recommendations today.
5. Watch for today's Cola ThinkTank. We've got the city's premier advocate fort the poor going up against the city's premier advocate for the poor over the $60 car tab fee. It's not to be missed.
