• The Tacoma News Tribune reported yesterday
that the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America contributed more than $3.6 million this month to the political committee opposing Initiative 1183, Costco's liquor privatization initiative.
The D.C.-based trade group for distributors released this statement:

The Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America opposes I-1183 because that measure is designed to disable an effective regulatory structure that balances consumer demand with appropriate control over the distribution of alcohol and the licensed players in the Washington state market. A similarly ill-considered deregulatory initiative backed by Costco was rejected just last year, but they have chosen to ignore the message delivered by the citizens of that state and their elected representatives who drafted legislation to allow for limited privatization while maintaining strong regulatory control.

Alcohol distributors were also the main checkbook fighting last year’s Costco-backed initiative, but most of the money came from the beer industry — which also opposes this one, but hasn’t spent money against it.

• King County Council member Jane Hague's percentage of the votes in last week's election continued to slip in returns this afternoon, with 37.92 percent to frontrunning challenger Richard Mitchell's 30.11 percent. Hague, a Republican, has been considered vulnerable since 2008, when she was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

• Former SCAN TV director Dian Ferguson continues to face an uphill battle in her race against city council incumbent Sally Clark, reporting a negative  funding balance of nearly $9,000 at the end of July. (She's raised about $46,000 total).

Clark, in contrast, has about $125,000 on hand, and has raised a total of more than $220,000.

• The PI.com reports that---like Republican gubernatorial candidate and current AG Rob McKenna and former AG and sitting Gov. Chris Gregoire---both leading candidates for attorney general, King County Council members Reagan Dunn and Bob Ferguson, have taken money from auto dealerships.

The Democratic Party has been trumpeting the fact that McKenna accepted the use of an SUV from a Bellevue Honda dealership and took more than $100,000 from the auto industry---an industry the AG is charged with policing.

• You can add another endorser to the string of supporters backing state Rep. Roger Goodman (D-45) in his 2012 bid to replace US Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA, 1), who's running for governor. Today Goodman picked up the nod from  State Rep. Luis Moscoso (D-1).

As we've reported, Goodman and his fellow congressional contender, Democratic state Sen. Steve Hobbs (D-44), have been racking up legislative endorsements while a third candidate, state Rep. Marko Liias (D-41), has been falling behind.
