Morning Fizz
To Bring Sexy Back
1. We've got good news for those of you who where aghast at the picture we ran yesterday of Seattle City Council member Mike O'Brien. He reports that he shaved the beard.
He also reports that he was in earnest about his planned brown bag discussion on tolling the deep-bore tunnel. As Erica reported yesterday, the city ethics commission told him to cancel it because it looked like he was trying to affect the August 16th Ref. 1 election. (His City Hall confab on the issue was scheduled for July 28.)
"I'm not wanting to just present my perspective," he says. "I'll probably just schedule it after the election. After the election it will still be important."
2. Dale Pusey, the mystery candidate running against Seattle City Council member Tom Rasmussen who's raised just $100 (it's a check from himself), exists. We met him yesterday. Pusey, who showed up at our office bike helmet in hand, tells us he's an avid biker: He bikes 13.5 miles to work every day as an accountant in Bellevue from his West Seattle home in the Delridge district (27 miles round trip).
Pusey (pronounced pew-see) is no Mayor Mike McGinn fan, though. He tells us McGinn's "self righteous" bike advocacy is a "turn off" for those who don't bike yet, and he feels it's hurting the cause.
He also supports the tunnel and seems genuinely angry that McGinn told voters in the 2009 election that he wouldn't get in the way of the project, "but that's all he does." Pusey wasn't actually in town during the election—he was biking across the country.
Pusey had no specific quibbles with Rasmussen (which he pronounced Ras-mew-sen), had a vague sense that there are too many regulations on business, laid out a plan to keep the Viaduct standing—refashioned as a double-decker park with the tunnel below, and said to make Seattle bike friendly, the city should focus on striping side streets not arterial roads.
3. Fizz has discovered that Paige Green Dunn, wife of King County Council member (and Republican candidate for AG) Reagan Dunn, has a blog. The mission statement: "To bring sexy back in this new phase of life." (She's a new mom.)
For advice on lusty lashes, bracelets, doing your nails, spas in Sun Valley, and frank talk about miscarriages, check out Dunn's "The Mom around Town" blog. [pullquote]Godden's the only council candidate to win the endorsement of both the King County Labor Council and the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 21.[/pullquote]
4. Yesterday, we gave Jean Godden rival Maurice Classen some friendly coverage about his endorsements from environmental all star state Rep. Hans Dunshee (D-44, Snohomish) (PubliCola actually gave Dunshee our "Committee Chair of the Session" award this year for his Paul Krugman-style stand on the capital budget); drug reform all star state Rep. Roger Goodman (D-45, Kirkland); and King County Council president, Democrat Bob Ferguson.
So, here's some boasting rights for Godden: She's the only council candidate to win the endorsement of both the King County Labor Council and the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 21. (True.)
"I'll take our 15 labor union endorsements over Classen's zero any day," quips Godden campaign manager Carlo Caldirola-Davis.
5. Fizz hears there's another potential candidate for congress in the wings who's keeping an eye on how redistricting shakes out: Former US Rep. Dave Reichert rival Suzan DelBene. DelBene is currently the Director of the Washington State Department of Revenue.
Note to potential rivals: While the Dept. of Revenue is a misnomer these days, Democrat DelBene, a former Microsoft exec (married to a current Microsoft exec), does not have cash flow problems. Last time, she put up $2.3 million of her own money.
