Early Afternoon Jolt: McGinn's Ratings Plummet
According to a new poll by EMC Research, likely voters' opinions of Mayor Mike McGinn's performance have plummeted, plunging from a negative rating of 65 percent in March of this year to 73 percent in June.
In the poll of 500 likely voters, 56 percent had a negative opinion of McGinn and just 36 percent had a favorable view, compared to 45 percent negative and 46 percent favorable three months ago. Views of McGinn's job performance, meanwhile, shifted from 65 percent negative, 33 percent positive, to 73 percent negative, 23 percent positive between March and June. And just 28 percent of likely voters said they'd vote to reelect McGinn, with 61 percent saying they'd vote for anyone else.
Those numbers are obviously terrible news for McGinn, who's up for reelection in two years. But they should also serve as a sign for the pro-tunnel campaign: Instead of waging a campaign about the tunnel (the city is divided 33/33/33 on all the options, and so, the pro-tunnel camp has no chance of cracking 50), they should make the measure, which was shepherded to the ballot by McGinn, a referendum on him.
