Afternoon Jolt: Mayor McGinn
Today's Loser is Mayor Mike McGinn
At Mayor Mike McGinn's press briefing this week confirmed what we've been hearing since the beginning of the legislative session: No one in Olympia is interested in talking to the mayor about removing a provision in state legislation putting "Seattle-area property owners" on the hook for cost overruns on the deep-bore tunnel.
"The mood in Olympia is bad ... because they're facing a very, very challenging fiscal environment," McGinn said yesterday. "There appears to be no appetite in Olympia to remove the cost overrun provision."
At first glance, McGinn looks like a loser: Removing the cost overruns provision was right at the top of his agenda in Olympia.
Today's Winner is Mayor Mike McGinn
However, this "loss" is actually a political win for McGinn: With the issue unresolved, he gets to continue his campaign against the tunnel as the local hero pointing his finger at the oppressors in Olympia.
