Afternoon Jolt: Port Commissioner May Run Against Godden for Council
Seattle Port Commissioner Rob Holland tells PubliCola he's "definitely thinking about" running for city council against incumbent Jean Godden, who has been on the council since 2003. Holland says he'll make a final decision by next Friday.
"I've definitely been talking to other elected officials and my colleagues at the Port and community folks" about whether he should run, Holland says. "Most of the people I've talked to are very supportive."
Holland says his Port experience gives him an understanding of industrial policy and economic development that's lacking on the current council. "There's not a lot of synergy between the international and local" policies, he says. "We're not out of the woods yet when it comes to our economic woes."
If he won a council seat, Holland says he would step down as port commissioner. And he expressed what sounded like frustration about the limitations of his Port job, saying, "there's only so much you can do [for economic development] at the Port. There's a lot you can do at the city level."
