Council Aide Involved in Soccer Sex Scandal Resigns

By Erica C. Barnett July 28, 2010

Ann Corbitt, a legislative aide to City Council member Tom Rasmussen who was involved in a sex scandal with British soccer player Ashley Cole earlier this year, has resigned, Rasmussen confirmed. Rasmussen would not say whether he had asked Corbitt to leave, citing his policy of not "discussing personnel matters," but he did say Corbitt submitted her resignation two days ago, and that it took effect immediately.

Corbitt gave a salacious account of her affair with the married soccer star to the British tabloid News of the World, including video and copies of text messages she exchanged with Cole. PubliCola was the first publication in the US to cover the story.

After news of the affair broke, Cole's wife filed for divorce. It's unclear how much, if anything, Corbitt was paid for her story (a common practice in the British press); Corbitt herself has not returned an email for comment.
