Property Watch: Camano Island’s Midcentury Party House
Looking for a tranquil, solitary Puget Sound getaway? This Camano Island home isn't it. Sure, the 80 feet of sandy beachfront on placid Port Susan might sound ideal for solitude, but this entertainer’s paradise was made for sharing.
Unlike the walled-off styles that came before, midcentury architecture tends to feature open floor plans, seemingly purpose-built to accommodate roomfuls of punch-sipping partygoers. The massive bar flanking the home’s main living space bolsters that impression—this is no party room relegated to the basement. With floor-to-ceiling display shelves, beverage fridges, and room for at least six to sit at the bartop, it gives most commercial bars a run for their money. And few to none can counter its views.
But the property doesn’t just play the era’s greatest hits. Built by original owner Roy Loughnan in 1959 and molded (though not too much) by its more recent inhabitants, the home brims with idiosyncrasies.
Where many of the era’s Pacific Northwest architects favored Douglas fir or western red cedar for their abundant wood accents, Loughnan brought Alaskan yellow cedar—traditionally used by boat builders—down to Washington, milled it on-site, and imbued his home with its unique golden tone. As beach houses go, the nod to the nautical couldn’t be subtler.
Loughnan’s distinctive seafaring references didn’t stop there: In the atrium of the home, which once also held an in-ground pool frequented by neighbors, Loughnan built a catwalk out of grating sourced from the bilge of a World War II ship. The pool has since been filled in. But the wide-open space, anchored by an impressive concrete-coated fireplace built by a local mason, still works swimmingly for entertaining guests.
With nearly 6,000 square feet of living space and just two roomy bedrooms, the home clearly prioritizes temporary company, though a third room could sleep the occasional overnighter.
But unlike many of its contemporaries, its kitchen can handle all those extra mouths to feed. The original cabinets were built by Loughnan on-site, and its massive Viking range features two ovens and nine cooking surfaces. Across the counter, there’s space for four more barstool-perching visitors to chat and enjoy the Puget Sound views. It's a house that demands a gathering.
