judges across the country have dined—and voted—and the nominees have emerged in each category as contenders for this year’s James Beard Awards.
In January, the James Beard Foundation announced the semifinalists vying for America's highest culinary honor. Now, that group gets narrowed down to five finalists in each category (except for Best New Restaurant, which has 10).
In the national categories, Seattle (and Washington) did pretty darn well. Shaun McCrain and Jill Kinney's Ballard destination, Copine, is a finalist for Outstanding Restaurant. Rob Roy is a finalist for Outstanding Bar. Yenvy and Qunyh Pham of Phở Bắc and its attendant businesses are in contention for Outstanding Restaurateur. Meanwhile, Pullman restaurant the Black Cypress is a finalist for Outstanding Hospitality. Down in Portland, Gregory Gourdet's restaurant Kann is a finalist for Best New Restaurant. (Hajime Sato, the original owner of Mashiko in Seattle, is in the running for Outstanding Chef for his current spot in Michigan.)
Only one Seattle chef showed up in the Best Chef: Northwest and Pacific Category—Aaron Verzosa of Archipelago. Oregon dominated the slate this year, but Alaska also placed a finalist for the first time in recent memory. For context: This regional category includes chefs from Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Hawaii not to mention three formidable food cities in Honolulu, Portland, and Seattle.
The winners will be announced June 4 at a ceremony in Chicago. Below is the complete list of Oregon and Washington finalists, but you can read the full list of nominees from across the nation right here.
