Uncle Mike’s BBQ, a neighborhood barbecue joint in White Center, closed in June. But its eponymous owner Michael Gordon has passed the pitmaster’s torch (and ownership) to his nephew, Xavier Natallanni, whose new Northgate location has its grand opening today. Uncle Mike was so impressed by the new location that he bequeathed Natallanni his Uncle Mike’s BBQ jacket at the soft opening in early July.
The menu has standard barbecue fare—smoked everything (from beef and pork to tofu), mac-and-cheese, cornbread—and lighter options, like a summer salad with arugula, spinach, and raspberries. Everything is made from scratch, and organic and local as much as possible.
Saturday and Sunday mornings have a separate brunch menu. Expect comfort-food fare like the Winter Harvest Tart: butternut squash, mascarpone and goat cheese, house dressing, spinach, buttery tart, over-easy egg, with a side of meat or tofu.
The mood is relaxed and family friendly, with sports on the TVs and food arriving in compostable to-go boxes, to cut down on water usage.
Natallanni says they'll be serving beer and wine by football season and in the same building he plans a bakery, Auntie Liz's (named after Uncle Mike's wife), in the coming months, and a more formal sit-down dining room within the next year.
The new spot is located at 11740 15th Avenue Northeast. Uncle Mike’s is closed Mondays, and open 11 to 9 Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; 11 to 10 Friday; Saturday 10:30 to 10; and 10:30 to 4 Sunday. More information is available on their Facebook.
