An enviable spread at Beach Bakery.

Two neighborhoods cozied alongside two opposite waterfronts have welcomed some recent additions: Shelby’s Bistro and Ice Creamery in West Seattle and Beach Bakery on Rainier Beach.

Shelby Varden officially opened his bistro and ice creamery last week at the corner of California Avenue and Southwest Edmunds Street. Within the pastel walls is a 140-seat restaurant with the original bar serving mostly as an ice cream counter, plus plenty of tables for groups and families. Similar to the ice cream parlor chainlet Farrell’s, dine here for lunch, dinner, and even weekend brunch; you’ll find a lot of comforting bistro classics on the menu. And if it’s your birthday, you can get a free sundae if you want to.

Indeed, there's no shortage of sundae creations at Shelby’s. There are about a dozen, some served with Oreo cookies or brownies, some classic iterations like banana split, and some that feed up to 10 people. Sweet Jesus.

Meanwhile on Rainier Avenue, pastry chef Amy O’Connell has brought the area a cafe with a pastry case full of inventive baked goods. Beach Bakery, which opened in April, is already a neighborhood hub—one that feels like if your favorite aunt baked you everything.

Though O’Connell keeps the menu rotating, expect some consistently fun and flakey treats. Things like a cinnamon sugar–dusted jelly doughnut muffin, a rhubarb coffee cake, a pineapple coconut muffin made sans gluten, a potato doughnut with a maple glaze and smoked sea salt, plus a slew of scones, squash breads, and more. There are even pastries of the more delicate variety such as seasonal fruit tarts and coconut-topped French eclairs.

If you prefer savory to sweet, see yourself to a cheddar biscuit sandwich or an egg, cheese, and bacon waffle breakfast sandwich. Martinis are great, but this might be the new breakfast of champions.
