These “fun” food holidays can start to look a little gimmicky. With National Chicken Cordon Bleu Day, National Raisin and Spice Bar Day, and National Cinnamon Crescent Day all happening this week (and those are just the food-related ones), you start to wonder if people actually celebrate them, or know that they exist.
Forget National Walk Around Things Day and National Lima Bean Respect Day—we’re glad that of all the crazy days happening in April, John Sundstrom's Slab Sandwiches And Pie decided to celebrate National Grilled Cheese Day on April 12. The chef's Capitol Hill sandwich counter, tucked in the corner of Lark, will honor the humble sandwich with its own creative twists. Slab will roll out five special grilled cheese concoctions next week in honor of the faux-holiday.
Grilled cheese week runs from April 11-15. Sandwich lineup as follows:
Monday — Oozy: housemade American cheese, fried onion rings, and pickled jalapeño on a potato roll
Tuesday — Inside-Out: farro toast with Gruyere, bacon, and smoked pickles inside and toasted Gruyere on the outside
Wednesday — Seoul Food: house-made American cheese, kim chi, and sliced hot dogs on white bread
Thursday — Banana Chocolate: Theo chocolate, cream cheese, caramelized banana, and smoked marshmallow on challah
Friday — Flower Child: smoked avocado, sunflower sprouts, and white cheddar on whole grain bread
