What: Milbrandt Vineyards Traditions Pinot Gris Columbia Valley 2014 $13

Where: Belltown Market, Downtown Spirits, Markettime Foods, Central Co-op, Leschi Market, Ralph's Grocery and Deli, 6th Ave. Wine Seller

Why: Despite being one of Washington’s most produced white grape varieties, pinot gris has yet to establish a clear identity in our state. Styles range from dry to medium sweet, unoaked to oaked, light bodied to full bodied. This is no doubt a reflection of the myriad styles that are produced around the world, but it’s hard to find what’s distinctly Washington about most of them. Rather many seem to float in a sea of mediocrity, which leads one to ask: is it the state, the style, or the grape variety that’s the problem?

One pinot gris that consistently bucks this trend and rises above its peers comes from Milbrandt Vineyards. This wine is made in a dry, sleek style, making it perfect for a hot summer day. The 2014 Milbrandt Vineyards Columbia Valley Pinot Gris ($13) does not disappoint. It’s full of lightly spritzy pear and green apple flavors that bring a sense of freshness. Try it with summer salad. Drink up!
