Novelty hills cabernet cug1ev

What: Novelty Hill Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley 2012 $26

Where: Ballard Market, Matthews Fresh Market (Bellevue), Metropolitan Market, PCC, QFC

Why: Winemaker Mike Januik of Januik Winery and Novelty Hill in Woodinville rarely misses. The consistency wine after wine, year after year, is laudable.

Januik comes from the family tree of Chateau Ste. Michelle, where he served as head winemaker from 1990 to 1999. The eponymous winemaker subsequently started Januik along with its sister winery, Novelty Hill. The two wineries produce a broad range of wines—over 30 in total—from sauvignon blanc and roussanne to cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. At Januik/Novelty Hill, Januik brings over 30 years of experience to bear, having made wine from Columbia Valley fruit since 1984.

Perhaps it’s this breadth of experience that allows Januik to craft such consistently high-quality wines. But the wines at Januik/Novelty Hill are not just high quality, they also provide exceptional value. One such example is the Novelty Hill Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley 2012 ($26). It displays an appealing mix of fruit and barrel aromas and flavors, with notes of black fruit, cocoa, and vanilla. It has plenty of richness and a lengthy finish, drinking well above its price point. Drink up!
