Weekly Wine Pick: Stevens Winery StevensTimley Malbec Yakima Valley 2012

A malbec that runs against the grain

By Sean P. Sullivan May 19, 2015

What: Stevens Winery StevensTimley Malbec Yakima Valley 2012 $32

Where: Winery

Why: In recent years, wine styles around the world have been getting riper. Whether you attribute this to global warming, viticultural practices, internationalization, or so-called Parkerization, there is no doubt that wines from Washington and elsewhere are carrying more alcohol than they did 15 years ago. Here’s one wine though that runs against this grain.

The Stevens Winery StevensTimley Malbec Yakima Valley 2012 ($32) is all malbec coming from Dineen Vineyard in the Yakima Valley. It comes in at a low 13.4 percent alcohol, a full percentage point (or even two) below many Washington reds from the same vintage. It’s all ripe fruit though, with malbec’s trademark herb and sweet plum aromas and flavors. However, the supple, polished feel is where this wine really shines.

“This may be the lowest-alcohol wine I have ever made,” noted winemaker Tim Stevens, whose wines have always focused on balance. It’s also one of the tastiest. At that alcohol level, it’s easy to convince yourself to have another glass without worrying what the next day will bring.

This wine is just starting to hit the market. Inquire with your local retailer or stop by the winery in Woodinville.
