Brunswick and Hunt to Open in Ballard

One of the city's best food microhoods welcomes a stylishly seasonal newcomer.

The Ballard block that’s home to Delancey, Essex, Honore, and the Fat Hen is becoming an impressive restaurant microhood—just last week I heard Joshua Henderson proclaim it one of his favorite restaurant strips in the city. Now a new project at the corner of 70th and 15th will soon cap off that strip.

Brothers Barry and Scott Rogel are opening Brunswick and Hunt in a brick edifice that just happens to be known as the W.E. Hunt Building. Barry Rogel owns the classic DeLuxe Bar and Grill, which just celebrated its 50th birthday. Scott owns the Athenian in Pike Place Market. Brunswick and Hunt, they say, will be a major departure from either of these venues—a sit-down restaurant ("nice, without being fancy," says Barry) with an extremely seasonal menu and a Graham Baba-designed interior dressed in wood, leather, and steel.

The interior, the name, and the menu were all inspired by a turn-of-the-century bar and mural from an old tavern that Scott Rogel happened upon in a tavern in the town of Winlock. Now both bar and mural (a Northwest scene of a hunter who has just killed a stag, appropriately titled “The Hunt”) have undergone a major restoration in preparation for their new life in Ballard.

Ballard native Jeffrey Davidson will be running the show in Brunswick and Hunt’s open kitchen. He’s an alum of Ray’s, Vios at Third Place, and Bastille, as well as a nose-to-tail guy. This only seems appropriate in a restaurant with a giant hunting mural. Ready yourself for the Hunter’s Burger, a mix of game meat and beef, and plates like scallops cooked on a cedar plank with duck bacon, pickled peppers, and lava salt. Or, depending on the season, a creamed kale with nettle gouda. And—as we ludicrously fortunate Seattle diners might expect—the menu will draw from local, sustainably run farms. Bar manager Eric Holmquist will man the classic cocktails and roster of local beer, wine, and spirits.

Looks for an early 2014 opening.
