There was much anticipation surrounding the opening of Meeru Dhalwala’s restaurant, Shanik, in South Lake Union this past April. Followers of Vijs—her husband’s critically acclaimed Indian spot in BC—were both ecstatic and skeptical, but its fair to note that Shanik is not a cookie cutter of its sister restaurant. And a good way to get a taste of what a place offers is by heading to happy hour.

This new happy hour is a good excuse to leave the office early Monday through Friday from 4 to 5:30pm. Mogo fries with creamy fenugreek dip, lentil and potato pakoras, papri-chaat with house sprouted lentils, and mini spicy crepes with chutneys are all $5 and bring the flavor to SLU. Carefully crafted cocktails to pair with the food will be featured—as well as a glass of white, red, rose, and draft beer.

The bar area at this Capitol Hill spot does happy hour Sunday through Thursday from 5 to 6:30 and late hours 9:30 to 11pm; Sunday late run is 9 to 10pm. The early hour offers delicious things in ramekins. The happy thali for $6 is ever changing, but an example could be merguez sausage, albacore with smoked tomato, Sichuan peppercorn stuffed egg, and curry leaf avocado spread. For the later crowd, there’s a late-night naanwich, with your choice of filling for $6. And specialty cocktails are $6, drafts for $3, and select wines for $5.

Here's another
dark, cozy basement to add to the list for a break from the sun. And happy hour is everyday from 3 to 6pm. The beers and wine by the glass are a dollar off, and the specialty cocktails are $2 off—which includes the concoctions made with house-infused saffron vodka. Select appetizers are $3.99. You shouldn’t miss the spinach or chicken momo, Tibetan style dumplings served with a trio of chutneys for dipping.

Bengal Tiger
This neighborhood spot on Roosevelt Way has happy hour Monday through Friday from 4 to 6pm. A handful of bright, flavorful cocktails are $6 to $7, like a coconut Mai Tai and a ginger martini. A variety of kati kebab, samosas, vegetable or paneer pakoras, and Bangala wings with housemade tomato chili sauce all range from $3 to $7.
