How about some donuts? Image via National Donut Day's Facebook page.

Today,, June 7 is national doughnut day. Aka the best day of the year for fictional characters Homer Simpson and Agent Cooper of Twin Peaks. Which is also fitting since food holidays seem a bit like made up ridiculousness. You know, like eggnog day in June or tapioca day in general, but at least this doughy celebration comes with some history that we can be proud of.

The Salvation Army created the holiday in 1938, in honor of the women who had handed out doughnuts, as a small token of thanks, to the World War I soldiers. Celebrate the 75th anniversary of national doughnut day with a dunker at one of these pastry-making establishments.

Top Pot
To continue with the tradition of service, all of the Top Pot shops are teaming up with Northwest Harvest to collect nonperishable food items. Drop off your canned goods and buy a pink feather boa doughnut to celebrate. No freebies, but there are possible prizes to be had at each location. Enter for chances to win a gift card for a dozen or for the main prize, a dozen of those delectable rings each month for an entire year. That’s a whole lot of doughnuts and a great way to become the most popular person at work.

Mighty-O Donuts
The organic cinimini donuts are on the house this Friday at this Green Lake adjacent shop. It’s one freebie per person. And if one mini isn’t enough (when is it ever?) the bakers will be toiling away from 7 to 11am to make sure everyone can subsequently stock up on their favorites. It’s pretty hard to pass up a glazed lemon poppy seed variety, especially when warm. Also find the packaged minis by the dozen for a $1.50 off at participating Whole Foods Markets all weekend.

Dahlia Bakery
You won’t find you’re traditional holey donuts here, but fluffy cinnamon and sugar beignets instead. And today only, the bite-size doughnuts will be available individually for 50 cents apiece. A bag of six accompanied by vanilla mascarpone and seasonal strawberry jam for dipping is also available for $6. The bakery is prepared to pump ‘em out all day from 7:30 to 7pm.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts
It’s your pick here for a free doughnut of any variety at all area locations. So what will you choose: Traditional glazed? Chocolate iced or sprinkles? Hopefully that’s the hardest decision you have to make all day. If you’re super ambitious you could make the circuit from the Tacoma location to SoDo, up Aurora to North Seattle, and back around to Issaquah. We won't judge.

Sun Liquor Distillery
The legendary Top Pot donut burger is back for one day only in honor of the holiday. Crispy bacon, tomato, and lettuce stuff the traditional glazed donut served with a side of fries. It's the perfect union of a sweet breakfast and a hearty lunch.

Dunkin’ Donuts
If you’re down for a serious road trip—you know, to the East Coast, no big deal—you can get a free doughnut from the chain today. It's releasing a whole new concept for the holiday: a traditional glazed doughnut sandwich with smoked bacon and fried egg. That takes sweet and savory breakfast to a whole new level. Not that this helps any of us in Seattle, yet.
