 Chester Gerl has spent the past years as the chef at one of Seattle's most Seattle restaurants. And now he's planning to leave Matt's in the Market and head east.

According to the announcement sent out this morning, Gerl is headed to New York to be closer to family; his wife Julia grew up in Brooklyn. Gerl and owner Dan Bugge took over the restaurant from eponymous founder Matt Janke in 2007, retaining the name, charm, and reputation of the space hidden away in the eaves of Pike Place Market's Corner Building.

Gerl will be cooking with Marc Meyer, a New York chef behind Cookshop, Five Points, and Hundred Acres, whose commitment to all things seasonable and sustainable mirrors Gerl's.

As of December 1, sous chef Shane Ryan will take over the kitchen on an interim basis. He has been at the restaurant for a year and a half and Bugge promises a seamless transition. Maybe some of these guys can come back for a night or two to pitch in.
