It started as a Faceboook challenge to Marination Nation's legion of fans. "Lady Cicerone" Robyn Schumacher, who will be designing the beer program at new Alki beachfront taco and shave ice outpost Marination Ma Kai, announced last week that one of the beer taps will pour a Northwest beer of the public's choosing. The highly official nomination process: Describe your IPA in four words starting with the letters T-A-C-O.

I was partial to the Boundary Bay IPA nomination: "T-otally rhymes, A-vailability limited in West Seattle, C-ollege!, O-MG factor." But a vocal contingent of beer drinkers got especially creative with Georgetown's Lucille IPA, proclaiming it "Tasty, Awesome, Crisp, Over-the-top hops." Also: "Tasty Ale Consumed Often," "Terrific Ale Consumed Oceanside," and "Totally Alki's Choice, Obviously."

Marination Ma Kai should be open by October 3, if all goes well. Schumacher is also working with Big Al Brewing to create a Marination-branded beer described as a "malt-forward brown ale" designed to complement the Hawaiian-Korean fare, particularly when it leans spicy.

The people's tap will change periodically, with some smaller-batch or hard-to-find brews making brief cameos, and crazy-popular favorites lingering a little longer. Each new beer will be the result of some sort of public input, be it a contest or some other clever way of channeling Marination's insanely vocal fan base.
