Unsung Bar Heroes: Mulleady's Irish Pub

An Irish pub with major cocktail cred.

It's Unsung Heroes week here on Sauced, in which readers chime in with their favorite underappreciated watering holes.

Mulleady’s Irish Pub

Open Since: Technically 2001, though it moved to its current location across the street on 21st Ave W in 2006.

Why it’s awesome: Two Sauced readers wrote in to sing Mulleady’s praises. And yes, we totally looked them up on the internet to make sure they are real people and not the owner’s cousins or something. And technically it’s hard to consider this bar unsung when owner Travis Stanley-Jones made the winning cocktail in our Contreauversial event last week. But  let’s go with it…one Sauced reader praised Stanley-Jones, who bought the bar in 2007, for reworking the menu “to be inventive and exciting without being obnoxious.” Mulleady’s is also located in Magnolia, a part of town that’s highly underserved when it comes to craft cocktails.

While Mulleady’s still looks every bit an Irish pub, Stanley-Jones has worked hard to develop a destination-worthy cocktail program, bringing in skilled bartenders like Brian Lee, Thomas Bondesson, and George St. John, and menu items like shepherd’s pie and toads in the hole, which manage to transcend the pub food label without betraying the pub vibe.
